Made Smarter grants guide for UK manufacturers

Who can get Made Smarter adoption support, what it funds in each English region, and how to prepare a project that qualifies.

What is the Made Smarter adoption programme?

How to prepare a project that qualifies

Know the problem

Funding supports specific, evidenced business problems. An operations assessment gives you baselines and a cost for the problem you are solving.

Build the case

Show current-state data, the expected improvement and payback. Reviewers favour projects with measurable outcomes.

Sequence the spend

Fix the process, then fund the technology that locks the gain in. This avoids paying for a system you cannot yet use well.

Made Smarter grants: your questions

Who is eligible for Made Smarter adoption support?

Small and medium-sized manufacturing and engineering businesses with manufacturing premises in England. Some regions add their own conditions, such as being registered or trading in the region.

How much can a manufacturer get?

Several regions offer match-funded grants of up to £20,000 towards hardware and software, which means you fund part of the cost yourself. Other support, such as assessments and interns, may be fully funded. Amounts vary by region.

Can Welsh manufacturers apply?

The adoption programme is for England. Welsh manufacturers should look at the support available through Business Wales and the Welsh Government. See our Wales page.

Do I need a consultant to apply?

No, but an independent assessment and roadmap can strengthen an application and make sure the funded technology solves a real problem.
